As the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season begins, what a great opportunity to pause and be intentional about how to bring our practical faith into the midst of our gatherings and celebrations.  Whether you are celebrating with your small group, friends, or family, here are some fun ideas to spread the joy of Christmas.

1. Bring your favorite ornament! Christmas tree ornaments many times have special stories and meaning behind them.  Have each person bring their favorite ornament and share why it is meaningful to them and how it reminds them of the real meaning of Christmas.

2. Go caroling! Put someone in charge of finding words for Christmas carols and printing enough for everyone.  Take the whole group out into the neighborhood or to a nursing home and make a joyful noise!

3. Read the Christmas story from Luke 2:1-20. Ponder the wonder of it all!

4. Have a “white elephant” gift exchange. As you laugh at the worst of gifts, remember that Jesus is the perfect gift.

5. Invite new people to your party, people you’d like to have coming to your small group. This is a great way for them to meet people in a fun and relaxed setting.

6. Use the Fear Not Sermon Discussion Guide to create great discussion about the Christmas story AND find daily Bible readings for the month of December. (Available here.)

7. Pray together. The holidays can be a time of heightened stress.  So pray for God’s peace and perspective.  Pray also for those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

8. Encourage each other. Give each person a piece of paper and a pen. Each person writes his or her name at the top of the paper, and passes it to the right. Then each person writes a note of appreciation or encouragement on the paper they have for the person whose name is at the top. Then members pass the papers to the right again. When you get your own paper back, the activity is finished, and each person can put away their papers to enjoy at home or take time to read your affirmations aloud to the group.

9. Find a place to serve together. Check out our partner ministries here.

10. Invite Friends to Christmas Services. According to a recent LifeWay Research study, 61 percent of Americans attend church services at Christmastime. Which means, of course, that 4 out of 10 people do not attend. Yet, among those who don’t attend church at Christmas, 57 percent said that if someone they knew invited them to church at Christmastime, they would go. Commit as a group to invite your neighbors, friends, and co-workers to Christmas services. Encourage and spur one another on along the way.

Go and be the church!  God is with us!
